Our Boy, JD Fortune rubbed some non-everclearian, non-asshat loving, non-BSC the wrong way when he stated the following:

This one is really tricky. The first episode was taped in the spring, and then they gave them a number of weeks to learn a small catalogue of INXS songs, in case they should fall into the bottom three, and would be required to sing an INXS song. Many of the others knew few of the INXS songs, and had to learn them.
It was a well-know fact the JD was a lifelong INXS fan and DID know most of their songs, so while he may have been bragging a little when he said it, he was still telling the truth as he knew it. To him it was like giving a part of his resume to INXS. He was, after all, applying for a job he wanted more than anything in the world. He wanted to impress them any way he could, and sell them on his attributes. He wasn't auditioning to be part of a chorus, he was auditioning to be the one and only lead singer. Bottom line, I cringed when I heard him say it, but I understand what he meant. None of the others would sing his praises -- he had to sing his own. |

I think that when he said that Phrase, he was stating that he already knew the INXS Songs (Only needed a Brush Up) because he grew up listening to them, so he was a True Long Time INXS Fan - That the Other Rockers, although talented, were trying to Learn them, maybe some for the First Time!
Also, maybe referring to Himself as truly being there because he Loved and Wanted more than anything to be the Lead Singer of INXS, and maybe he felt some of the others were instead there not for the Love of the Band, but only to Better their Careers. Also, this was a Competition and JD knew what the stakes were - He wanted to make it known that he was a True Fan! Not to mention, JD usually Speaks his Mind, no matter what! When I first heard that Phrase, I knew that he would get a lot of heat from it! In his life, he had to be a Survivor, he knew that this was a Competition, that he had nothing to Lose, but to Gain was his Dream, that was here and now! |

I believe he was an Inxs fan growing up and he was just stating the facts as he preceived them. I loved it when he said this, he put his cards on the table early, and let the others know he wasn't there to make friends!

I knew as soon as the words were out of JD's mouth that he would get heat for them. At the time I was thinking open mouth insert foot! I wasn't angry with JD for saying this though. I thought he just upped the stakes a bit. After all, he had just kicked serious tail with Hand in My Pocket and had really kicked his performance on California Dreaming. I cringed only because I knew that statement would make those in the house that didn't know INXS songs ready to flay him alive. I was right. They were ready to flay him alive, burn him at the stake, cut him off at the knees, etc. What JD did was speak to INXS. He said to them, "You guys should know that I love your band, but some of the others don't." Since the show, JD has said in some interviews that there were those in the house that not only didn't know INXS songs, but openly made fun of the band behind their backs. I think that bothered him because he was a true INXS fan first, last and always. This was his only way to tell the band what he felt it was important for them to know.

JD was a "complete unknown" to most people watching RS:INXS, especially so early in the series, and I can see how his comment might make them gasp. It just made me giggle. We are used to people in competions trying, at all costs, to make themselves look like perfect people. I imagine JD's family and friends were not surprised at all by his comment. They knew he was just speaking his mind and, like the old saying goes, "telling it like it is".
It certainly made the other contestants wake up and take notice. Now that we all know Jason so much better, we know that his comment is very typical of him. He had an important message he needed to get across to INXS and he didn't have many oportunities to speak to them directly like that. In the end, it looks like INXS came to understood him perfectly and actually found his openess refreshing and endearing. In hindsight, it seems like it was the right thing to say at the right time, because it changed the dynamic of the show and made JD the hot topic, for good or bad, with most people. IMHO |

At the time, I thought that he simply saw a chance to "make himself known to the band" because GGB had just said he was the singer most focused on the prize, and he felt he had to leap in with something. I thought he stuck his size 12 foot in his mouth when he said it, but agree with Fortune4Me's comment that it later became clear he truly did know and love the songs, and the band, more than anyone else in the competition.
I had no problem with his saying it - especially as I feel it was absolutely true. The only thing I don't like (looks around nervously, preparing to run for cover) is when he gives a rather coughcough inaccurate account of what happened, i.e. "they bashed me because I said I loved INXS songs". Umm... no, JD, they bashed you because you said you loved the songs and they didn't. Not quite the same! Much though I love his story-telling, this kind of being economical with the truth makes me a bit uncomfortable - just remember the need to keep that karmic debt clear, JD! |

AlmondLooks, I totally agree with you. JD does have a creative memory at times. Yes, he did say he loved INXS songs, sort of. But he did say that the others didn't. Now I'm as BSC as anybody else, but that's a bit of a distortion of the comment. Only looking at the positve part. Creative membory, I say. As JDWaveRider has said so many times, "Lie Pinnochio lie."

I watched this episode and was obviously in oblivion because I heard what JD said, but didn't really see a problem with it. I would expect anyone in a competition for a job to point out to the persons doing the hiring their strengths and others' weaknesses. I was surprised at the other's reactions though. Marty with his, "That made me feel a certain way." I was like, "Yeah, outted." I was already a JD fan so I was like, "Good job, JD."

Couldn't agree with you more, only4jd! I didn't see anything wrong with it either! He was honest and forthright, and he didn't deserve the criticism he got.

I agree with fortune4me that JD upped the stakes when he said this.
Also, with dcg, that JD was telling it like it was. What if when he got there, JD woke up to the fact that some of the people (ok...most) competing for what he thought, and still thinks, is the job of a lifetime...DIDN'T KNOW THE EFFIN' SONGS and didn't really care to get to know them. Who knows? My read on this then and now (always keeping in mind that it was a reality show produced MBP)(where nothing much is real) is that JD IS REAL and most, if not all the rest, were pretenders/pretending to want to be in INXS. I really hated that ssssooo many people on alot of different boards took this and Tried,Convicted,Sentenced,Executed,Buried,Exhumed,Beat up, And Buried Again OB/JD.....NO MATTER WHAT HE WAS PORTRAIED TO DO! I really love all of the interviews, signings, and M&G's that so many of you have graciously shared with all of us. To me, they are the snippets of the Real JD, not spliced together TV judged by so many single minded, holier than thou viewers.(um, no...I'm Not talkin' to any of you!) Sorry for ranting! I am done. For now! lol |

I know that some people like math ha!...well this is a story problem....
*all facts are approximate* 11weeks x 7days per week = 77 days 77days x 24hours per day = 1,848 hours actually*ding* spent in or around the Rockstar mansion, rehearsing, performing. 1/2 hr. reality episode x 11 weeks = 5.5 hrs. of TV 1 hr. performance show x 11 weeks = 11 hrs of TV 1/2 hr. elemination show x 11 weeks = 5.5 hrs of TV (I can't remember if some elim. shows were 1 hr. long and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'll throw in 2 more hours of RS:INXS show just to be on the safe side)......That brings our total of RS:INXS TV show time actually*ding* on my TV to a total of ######24 Hours###### are you still with me?lol! For every 1/2 hr. episode you need to.... -7 Min. of comercial time..7min. x 22epi. = 154 min. comercials (or roughly 2.5 hrs. of comercials) For every 1 hr. episode you need to.... -15 Min. of comercial time..15min. x 11epi. = 165 min. of comercials (or a low estimate of 2.5 hrs. of comercials) 24 hrs. of a reality TV show -5 hrs. of comercial time =21 hrs. of a reality TV show 1,848 hrs. spent at the RS mansion - 21 hrs. of a reality TV show = 1,827 hrs. that were........um....er...NOT SHOWN!! Sooooo, we saw a little more than 1% of the rockers time at the mansion. Granted,of that 1&1/2%, JD was probably shown 55% of the time. Now factor in the spoiler crew "telling us that some things really are not as they appear on our TV sets at home" Not real time, not real context, alot of unreal going on. What do we really know of when, why, how,or who(was unprepared and stuff) of a spliced together to fool us TV show? I believe We are the people JD has been waiting for.....people that know how to read between the lines baby! Every INXS interview I listen to confirms that I got it right trying to read between the MB lines crap! I especially love it when D.J.'s and interviewers are "Amazed" at what a G.R.E.A.T. guy JD is! Ha! |

JD is a multi-faceted individual. One moment he is like a naive child, the next an in your face rocker. I feel that when he made the now (in)famous statement, "While they're learning the INXS songs...", he accomplished both. He was revealing his true love for INXS in his child like honesty while leaving himself open to criticism. It was his second great performance in a row, so he was quickly establishing himself as a front runner and a tall poppy. We know what happens to "tall poppies".
While he may not have meant for his comments to be interpreted in an "ill way", they would be. It could be said that he was single-handedly taking "Rock Star" in the direction Mark Burnett could only dream of; let the drama begin! |

Was JD assessing what would happen right from the start? When did he start blocking the other rawkers out of his consciousness so that he could focus on the prize? Or did he? Did he absolutely know he was going to win? If so, is this a cocky attitude, or is he just certain of his own abilities?

Re: "They Got the Stereo and I Got The Band" | ||

I must say this one flew over my head at the time too. I was only watching whenever I happened to be home at this point, so I saw this episode then missed it for a couple of weeks. One of my friends - who watched religiously from the beginning - was talking about it and mentioned them all going in the huff with JD, and it never occured to me that it was because of this. When I realized it was, and finally saw the following episodes, my only thought was "stop throwing toys out your prams, you big load of babies."
If JD had stood up in front of us and announced that he loved INXS more and knew their music better, I'd have something to say. I'd demand that he explain himself to me, preferrably naked. However he said it in front of a crowd of people who: a) Had only heard Kick b) Thought that Pretty Vegas sounds like The Strangest Party c) Admitted in their audition interviews that they barely knew INXS "maybe just their hits." This I think is the only relevant point about the statement he made - it was true! And I reckon that it was precisely why it hit such a nerve with them and put them off their dinner. I have only just seen then the RS DVD for the first time, and have such respect for the lack of ego in evidence in the fact that INXS were willing to consider such a load of eejits that didn't have the respect to know their back catalogue inside out before auditioning. Because I disagree with Dave Navarro (and am aware that I have strayed from my original point somewhat) in that the new singer wouldn't need to know all their music because it was about the future. It is one thing for an established guitarist to join a band and not know everything they'd done before, when he (forgive me if I am wrong her, I am not a Chillis expert) wasn't going to be songwriting, not to mention that the band he joined were - what - less than 10 years old? - and another for a frontman and co writer proposing to lead a band, 30+ years established, without knowing what they'd been up to in that time. Rambled miles off course now, so will just say again: he was right. They were a load of jessies. |

What a beautifully-put and well-thought-out opinion, claired! One I agree with wholeheartedly. At the time, I didn't see anything at all wrong with what JD said, and could not for the life of me understand why the rawkers took him to task for it. I wonder if any of them look back and realize what asses they were for thinking that way, as they supposedly take their places in the real world. And what asses the public were who couldn't understand a simple truth when they heard it. JD fans got it. INXS got it. Why didn't they?

I thank God everyday that JD Fortune let his beautiful heart and soul lead him to his destiny. I never thought anything that JD did on the show including the infamous comment were malicious or cocky or even wrong. JD did things I wish I had the courage to do. He called out the others who had been trashing INXS behind the scenes when he said he knew the songs because he loved them. He showed Marty and Jordis for the second rate dog and pony show they are when he left them and wrote and INXS song while they wrote a bunch of junk that I can't and don't want to remember. If it hadn't been for divine intervention, JD wouldn't be where he is and INXS wouldn't be where they are. Thank the good lord for him.

only4jd, i know what you mean. to me he was probably just letting the others that they can't get to him and he was focused on being in the band at the end. it didnt seem like a problem when i first heard it either.
